The Guitar Style of Mississippi John Hurt

As taught by Frank Delaney for the

Spokane, Wa. Parks & Recreation Dept.

Class - Winter Quarter 2005

Mississippi John Hurt was, in my opinion, the greatest finger picking guitar player of all the country bluesmen. His music has a wonderful happy sound which expressed his personality, and you cannot listen to John's music without tapping your feet and smiling.

His guitar style is subtly complex, comprised of hammer-ons and slides, bass runs and pull-offs, his own unique chord formations, complex finger picking figures, and a wonderful overall timing and syncopation that is astounding.

If you can master his songs, from his simple Spike Driver Blues - to his complex finger picking epics of Candy Man and Frankie, the journey will be your reward.
